Continuing Education Requirements FAQs
SHARP Logger Continuing Education Requirements
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
How many hours of continuing education (CE) do I need? How many hours do I have now?
Once the SHARP Logger core program has been competed, each participant must earn 12 hours of continuing education (CE) credits every three years in order to maintain their status as a SHARP Logger. As of 2017, at least three of these CE credits must come from the SHARP Logger Update Class. SHARP Loggers can check how many CE credits they have, look up their three-year renewal date, and look up their SHARP Logger number at any time on the SHARP Logger website, www.sharplogger.vt.edu/search.html. This information can also be found on the wallet card that is issued to every SHARP Logger upon completion of the core program.
Does __________ count towards my continuing education credit?
Courses offered by the SHARP Logger program, as well as other approved formal short courses, workshops, or adult education courses will be accepted for continuing education credits. Any course or program with Continuing Forestry Education (CFE) hours sanctioned by the Society of American Foresters (SAF) will also be accepted. Additional opportunities for CE hours include certain approved professional organization memberships and involvement in promoting logging professionalism. Please see our full list of SHARP Logger Continuing Education Requirements on our website at www.sharplogger.vt.edu/TraditionalTraining.html.
When and where are CE classes offered?
SHARP Logger CE classes are offered around Virginia throughout the year. Please check out our list of upcoming CE credit opportunities at www.sharplogger.vt.edu/TraditionalTraining.html. Self-paced, online trainings (worth 1 CE credit each) can also be found on our website at www.sharplogger.vt.edu/OnlineTraining.html. Simply click the link for a training and follow the directions.
I failed to earn enough CE credits before my three-year expiration date. What do I do?
You have up to one year after your renewal date to earn the 12 hours (including the required update class) of CE credits. Until you have earned all 12 you are not considered an active SHARP Logger, however your status will be reinstated upon doing so. If more than one year has passed since your renewal date, you must attend the core training program again.
My name isn’t showing up on the website database. What happened?
First please make sure that your name is spelled correctly. The database will not display your name even if just one letter is incorrect. If your name still does not appear in the database, it is possible that you have missed your renewal date. Please contact us to resolve this issue. I took an approved CE class and the website hasn’t updated my credits yet. Why not? If the class was not associated with the SHARP Logger program, then it’s possible that we were not notified about it. Please notify us using the CE credit documentation form found on our website (http://sharplogger.vt.edu/documents/ContinuingEducationVerificationForm.pdf). If the course was offered through SHARP Logger, then we have record of your attendance. It may take up to two weeks to update the system when we have this information.
